I came across the Nat King Cole mural in Santa Monica and it inspired me to take an afternoon to listen to some of this jazz legend's music. His velvety voice has a way of smoothing out the day and giving me those Autumn NYC vibes (even though I'm now living in Los Angeles). So, if you want a little more of those cozy Fall feels, here are a few ways that Nat can help out...
GIVE YOUR LOVE TIME
First, if you only have a few minutes to spare, spend it watching Nat singing "When I Fall in Love," it's arguably one of the most beautiful love ballads and will set the tone for your Nat King Cole journey. In this fast-paced, swipe left/right world, the lyrics take on new meaning.
In a restless world like this is
Love is ended before it's begun
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun
The lyrics compel me to hit pause on the endless scrolling and "liking" and use that time to forge deeper connections on the loves I've been neglecting. Photography, writing, genuine quality time with friends and family... What is that forever love for you? Fall is the perfect time to slow down and rekindle those relationships.
MAKE YOU UNFORGETTABLE
Nat King Cole was also known for his classic, effortless style - not only with the outfits he wore, but in the way he carried himself. He was never one to let the clothes wear him, the clothes were an expression of who he was. In his case, his clothes were sophisticated and easy, but with great attention to detail. So as the crisp Fall air rolls in, take a cue from NKC and figure out what detail about your personal style is "Unforgettable." That's really what having style is all about - finding clothes that feel personal and represents your identity.
Unforgettable, that's what you are
Unforgettable, though near or far
And if you need a little help going through your closet to figure out what that could be, shoot my friend Angela Sauceda from Lost Angeles Style an email, she'll be happy to support you along the way.
WRITE YOURSELF A LETTER
Fall is all about taking stock of the past year and making plans for the one ahead. So join me as I make a cup of hot cocoa, wrap myself in my favorite blanket, and grab a good old fashioned pen, paper, and envelope because "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down (And Write Myself a Letter)."
I'm gonna write words, oh, so sweet
They're gonna knock me off my feet
A lotta kisses at the bottom
I'll be glad I got 'em
When was the last time you wrote a handwritten letter to anyone, much less yourself? Writing a letter to your future self is a thoughtful exercise that can help stretch those empathy muscles. Where are you in life now? How have you been hard on yourself? What are you afraid of? How can you be kinder? What made you feel the most accomplished this year? What is the one thing you wish for yourself to have in exactly twelve months? Write it all down, seal it with a kiss, and put it in a safe place.
Pro tip: If you're anything like me, do yourself a favor and mark the date on your calendar with the location of your safe hiding place, this way you won't miss it when the time comes. It'll also be a nice surprise when you get the reminder, because by then you may have forgotten you have a little love letter waiting for you.
And finally, hit play on the music playlist below (hear it in full on Spotify) and let Nat King Cole's voice start working its Fall magic. You'll be feeling warm and cozy in no time.
