Project 52: Warm

This time of year I find myself missing the warmth of summer, and dreaming of those days when I was meeting clients at 7pm to start their sessions instead of 3pm. Winter is honestly one of my favorite seasons, but it can be a challenging time to run a photography business. This time of year in Sacramento is often cold and dreary, without the added bonus of snow. Although it's not a long trek to find snow (about 2 hours), it's often more than my clients want to drive when they

Project 52: Light

This week's theme was all about light - the heart of photography. For those of you who have been following along on my journey, you know how much I love natural light. So much so, in fact, that I specialize in natural light photography. This doesn't mean that I have anything against studio photography. I actually admire quite a few photographers who do most of their work in studio. It also doesn't mean that I don't understand studio lighting. On the contrary, I have studio li

Project 52: Park Life

For those of you who may be new followers, you'll very quickly learn that although I have three dogs, Arawn, our middle child, is the darling. I know parents aren't supposed to admit to having a favorite, but we all know we're guilty of having one. With our three dogs, it wasn't hard for Arawn to become the favorite for both myself and my husband. We got him at 10 weeks old, compared to our other two, who came home at 2 years old and 5 months. Weighing in at 70 pounds, Arawn

Project 52: Natural Light

As most of you know I market myself as a natural light photographer. That isn't to say that I never shoot in a studio or with off camera flash, but my preferred light is that which is given to me by Mother Nature. Living in Northern California, I grew up spending a lot of time outdoors. We have gorgeous weather about 90% of the year, and in the Sacramento Valley, it almost never snows. So it was a natural choice for me when I decided to start my photography business to offer

Project 52: Perspective

It's that time of the week again, you guys! This week's theme is Perspective, which is great, because I've been thinking about writing a post with some tips on how to get better photographs of your dogs. I'll give you all a sneak peak this week with Tip #1: Don't be afraid to get a new perspective and get down to your dog's eye level. I truly think one of the things that separates pet photographers from other photographers who only photograph pets on occasion is our ability t

Tips to Choosing Your Perfect Pet Photographer in Sacramento

I recently found out that I was featured in a list of “The 7 best pet photographers in Sacramento” by Peerspace, and it led me to start thinking about what pet parents are really looking for in a pet photographer. There are tons of great pet photographers in the Sacramento area, so I thought I would pull together some tips on choosing the right photographer for you. Hint: These tips are in no particular order of importance, as each client may value each aspect differently. ON

Going into this week's 52-week pet photography challenge, I was unsure whether I wanted to be extra creative, or stick with the classics.

Project 52: Photographer's Choice

This week for the 52-week pet photography challenge it was photographer's choice. Now I'm sure you'd think I would be excited for this prompt since it gave me the freedom to do whatever I wanted. However, between my day job, my pet photography business, and my personal life, I have been so busy that I honestly just wanted someone to tell me what to do for the week. I was sorely tempted to skip this week, but then I remembered the promise I made to myself: Since there are so f

Project 52: Paint It Black

I recently joined a 52-week pet photography group on Facebook as a personal goal to challenge my photographic creativity. The idea is a new theme will be posted each week, and the members have to take a new photo that fits that theme, and post it to their blog. I know it's a little late in the year to join, but I thought it would be nice to spend these last weeks of the year learning the ropes on this project. So here I am, participating in my first week of this project, and
