You are in your basement when something catches your eye - a black streak on the wall. You look closer. Oh no! Is that mold growing? You begin moving boxes and notice that there is more - a lot more. You remember hearing something on the news about toxic mold causing all kinds of health problems.

YOU CAN'T ESCAPE MOLD. IT IS EVERYWHERE.

"I don't even know what black mold is!" So it's a good thing you're here. What is mold? Mold is a fungus, which grows in humid and warm places. As mold grows, it releases spores into the air. It is these spores that you do not want to be breathing in. In fact, some types of mold can be downright dangerous.

Black mold (known as Stachybotrys Chartarum), is one type of toxic mold that grows in warm dark places. It is most commonly found in homes where water leakage is an ongoing problem. In some cases, even condensation due to temperature differences or lack of ventilation can create a good habitat for mold growth.

The Danger of Mycotoxins

Black mold itself is not poisonous. It is the chemicals (called mycotoxins) that it releases into the air that cause all the trouble. As mold grows it produces more and more of these mycotoxins which your family is breathing in.

Once inside of the body, these toxins can cause all sorts of havoc.

Ranging from a slight allergic reaction to a very serious health problem, mold can be the cause of these mild to life threatening conditions:

skin inflammation, rash, eslethargy, memory loss, respiratory issues, immune system suppression, hemorrhage... and even death

What You Can Do About Black Mold

No matter what type of mold is discovered in your home, it is important to get rid of it right away. Even harmless molds can become a breeding ground for black mold.

While many people use chlorine bleach to clean mold, it is not very effective. It can even make the situation worse by introducing more moisture into the affected area. Another effect of the cleaning is that the spores spread further, which may cause illnesses, as well as spread the mold to other areas of the home.

Mold is a serious issue and needs to be taken care of. But that is no reason to panic. Trained Specialists have a variety of mold-killing chemicals at their disposal. Trained in cleaning and killing mold and their spores, mold specialists are great at handling mold problems, leaving you with little worry about mold's ongoing effects on your family's health.

98% of all basements in the United States will at some point have water damage. What exactly does that mean? It could be a lot of things; water damage can be fast or slow, minor or catastrophic, a quick fix, or a major loss of property issue that is expensive and time-consuming to solve. Honestly, based on the above statistic, one of the only things you can count on with water damage is that it happens to nearly everyone. When it does, we at North Eastern want to be there to help you.

So, you’ve sustained some water damage in your home? Don’t worry; nearly everyone has or will have that experience at some point. Being educated about what you’re dealing with can give you peace of mind and help you be prepared. Here are the three general categories of water damage, and what can be done to help each one.

Category One: Clean Water

There’s not much to this type of water damage besides what you can gather from its descriptive name. This water is clean and comes from an uncontaminated source, so it is not dangerous if consumed by pets or people. This may happen in your home if an incoming water line bursts, or if you have an overflowing sink or bathtub. In this case, experts can extract the water and dry things out for you. It is important to have this well-done; any remaining wet areas can become petri dishes for mold, fungus, and other nasty growth.

Category Two: Grey Water

This is water from a source that may have some contaminants in it. Water from the “clean” category may become gray if left for too long, but other sources include sump pump failures and overflowing washing machines, or some sewage pipes. This water could cause you, loved ones, or pets to become sick if exposure is high or if it is consumed. Be careful when handling this emergency, and call our teams.

Category Three: Black Water

This is the most hazardous type of water damage and ought to be the object of your high concern. This water is very contaminated and likely comes from a natural disaster or sewage plumbing. Some water, such as ground water entering the home as a result of flooding, may look clean but actually contain microbes that would place it in the "black" category. Call our teams of professionals who can help remove the water and disinfect your home to avoid exposing members of your household to nasty bacteria which can cause illness.

Clean Water that stands for an extended period of time will go from “clean” to “gray” and “black” as bacteria starts to grow in the water and in the surfaces of your home such as carpet and drywall. With all types of water damage, it is important that clean up take place as soon as possible to minimize bacteria growth, damage, and expenses. "There are some things to remember when making green cleaners though. Some of the great natural ingredients shouldn’t be mixed. When somethings are mixed they can neutralize each other or even create a dangerous reaction."

Much like mixing ammonia and bleach, one should never mix unfamiliar or even familiar substances.

"Speaking of green cleaning ingredients, vinegar is one of my favorites! It can do so much and is totally safe. I buy it by the gallon I use so much of it.. you can now even buy pre-made vinegar cleaners! So those that aren’t into the DIY thing can still have awesome, safe cleaners.
