How do the wealthy think? What makes them tick? What do they know and do that most of us don't? What traits do they share?

We all have all asked these questions (in our head or out loud) - let's be honest. We have all wondered what it takes. Some of us have just assumed they are lucky or fell into the right circumstances.

Let's take a peek into how they actually think.

In his book the Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America's Wealthy, Thomas J. Stanley Ph.D lists 7 common traits of millionaires:

1. They live below their means (spend less than they make)

2. They have built their own wealth (they did not inherit it) through their own time, money and energy.

3. They don't care about social status

4. They did not receive financial assistance from their parents as adult children.

5. Their kids are now self sufficient.

6. They recognize and seize opportunity.

7. They chose the right industry.

The author goes on to say that the biggest difference for millionaires is in their thinking. They tend to think long term (years and decades long term). He distinguishes between the common (material) view of wealth and "true" wealth. He points out that wealth has less to do with income levels and more to do a person's worth over time (net worth +age).

Other commonalities of the wealthy are:

1. They set goals and follow up on these goals.

2. They practice delayed gratification as a daily discipline.

3. They view change (both positive and negative) as opportunity.

4. They learn from successful people.

5. They never expect anything from anyone.

6. They invest in their financial education.

7. They are life long learners and generally have an abundance of books.

8. They choose to be creative rather than reactive when faced with adversity.

9. They prefer to focus on entrepreneurship and passive income over having a job.

10. They ask themselves questions that encourage growth and problem solving.

11. They direct their lives rather than have their lives direct them.

12. They have an abundance mentality.

13. They see money as abundant and time as a commodity.

14. They tend to add value to others and to situations.

15. They learn how to attract money and abundance.

"The secret to becoming wealthy is that there is no secret".

The bottom line is that we all have the same 24 hours in a day and we can all choose what to do with these 24 hours. It has been said that as long as money is more important than our time, we can never become wealthy. We all have the tools to choose our future and our life. We can all be financially free if we want.

Myths and misunderstandings about the wealthy abound. They are thought of as lucky, manipulative, pretentious and any number of other misinformed attributes. The reality, however, is often very different. In fact, many millionaires attribute their success to discipline, a positive outlook on life and a desire to live abundantly with themselves and others. They are generally happy people and enjoy sharing happiness with others. There are a number of positive and healthy disciplines embraced by "millionaires". Below are 8 that I have chosen as being both significant and doable.

1. They Make Exercise a Priority

Exercise is the number one activity of most successful people. Many rise between 4:30 and 6 for daily routines involving aerobic exercise and weight lifting. Some have more elaborate and disciplined routines. Richard Branson is one of the more exuberant and disciplined exercisers and he credits his exercise of alternately swimming, kite surfing or other to giving him a full 4 hours more of productivity per day.

Author Tom Corley ( Change your habits, change your Life) did a survey if 233 wealthy people, self-made millionaires for the most part and found that 76% take 30 minutes or more per day for some kind of aerobic exercise such as jogging, walking or biking.

So it seems that maintaining a healthy body is an integral part of being or becoming financially successful.

2. They Get Enough sleep

Successful people know that sleep time is not wasted time. They understand the benefits of giving both their mind and their body the down time they need to recuperate and refresh. The benefits of getting enough sleep are clear:

  • Increase in creativity

  • increased receptivity to learning

  • Increased ability to problem solve

  • Increase in productivity and decrease in errors

  • Decrease in emotional decision making

  • Increase in receptivity to the ideas of others

"Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise" (Benjamin Franklin)

3. They Get Up Early

Successful people understand the amazing benefits of starting their day early. The early hours of the day are quieter, offering fewer distractions. The brain has had time to recuperate and is fully charged ready to work, so productivity is enhanced. People who begin their day early are usually better at decision making and problem solving. They generally have a more positive outlook on life. Early risers tend to take advantage of the relatively peaceful hours to exercise, read and arrive at work earlier (thus avoiding the stress of traffic) to enjoy quiet time before the rush of the day begins.

4. They Spend Time with People Who Inspire Them

It has been said that who we surround ourselves with is who we will become, for better or for worse. So, if we want to become motivated, successful, healthy, happy and inspired, then we should be associating with inspiring people who embrace these characteristics.

"People inspire you or they drain you - pick them wisely. " (Hans F. Hansen)

"Surround yourself with positive people who believe in your dreams, encourage your ideas, support your ambitions and bring out the best in you." (Roy Bennet)

"Surround yourself with those who lift you higher." (Oprah Winfrey)

5. They Read a Lot for Seif Improvement

"How do you build a rocket?"

"I read books." (Elon Musk)

Successful and wealthy people know the benefits of making reading a regular part of their daily routine. Many of them attribute this habit to having contributed to their financial and social success. An important note is that, generally, they tend to read for self-improvement rather than strictly for entertainment. Some of the many benefits are that reading:

  • Reduces stress, depression, anxiety and dementia

  • Builds confidance

  • Increases the power of concentration

  • Improves writing and speaking skills

  • Improves problem-solving and decision-making abilities

  • Builds discipline

6. They Spend Time Alone Thinking

Successful, wealthy people make a point of incorporating 15-30 minutes of alone time into their daily routine. They use this time to brainstorm with themselves about areas of their life (careers, family, finances, friends goals etc.). Spending some alone each day to reflect and brainstorm helps to:

  • Clear the mind

  • Boost productivity

  • Rest and increase energy levels

  • Calm the spirit

  • Be more strategic in thinking

  • Find new solutions to old problems

  • Be more creativity

7. They Help Others Succeed

"The key to any business success is making someone else successful, so always look for ways you can help someone to succeed." Patrick McGovern (Data Group)

An abundance mentality recognizes that there is enough for everyone and that sharing information, inspiration, feedback in order to help others succeed will go around and come around again. The more we give out, the more we receive. Successful wealthy people understand this principle and put it into practice on a regular basis. All relationships (business, social and personal) benefit from embracing a mindset of abundance for all.

8. They Avoid Wasting Time on Distractions

Distractions do just that - distract us from what is really important and what we should be focusing on to get where we want to go. A characteristic of successful wealthy people is their ability to not be derailed by anything that could take their mind off their goals. Of course, the obvious distractions are social media and cell phones, but there are others that the wealthy do not allow to distract them. They don't listen to their excuses and welcome failure as a necessary step. They are not concerned with what other people think or with trying to be perfect. Successful wealthy people stay away from procrastination and other people"s business. They set their priorities and persevere, saying no whenever necessary.

What's not to love about avocados? You can chop them, grill them, freeze them, spread them, smash them, mash them and blend them. They are all around amazing!

The versatility of the avocado is only limited by our creative minds.

What are some of the amazing ways that the avocado can be eaten?

1. In smoothies

2. Spread on toast

3. As a butter substitute in mashed potatoes

4. As "French Fries"

5. In a pesto

6. In salads

7. In guacamole

8. As a salad dressing

9. As a creamy pasta sauce

10. As a grilled side dish

11. In avocado 'ice cream"

12. In muffins

13. In avocado cake

14. Avocado popsicles

15. Avocado pudding

16. As a substitute for sour cream

17. In humous

18. In cake icing

19. In cheeseless cheese cake

20. Stuffed with "whatever"

And it's soooooo... healthy too!!

1. Eye health and vision

Avocados contain both lutein and zeaxanthin which are antioxydants for the eyes. These two antioxydants help fight against eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

2. Heart health

Avocados are one of the best plant food sources of mono and poly unsaturated fats. Regular and moderate consumption of avocados can contribute to lowering overall cholesterol levels and decreasing LDL (bad cholesterol) levels.

3. Skin health

Avocados contain the fatty acid omega 9 or oleic acid which is involved in both the maintenance of skin moisture in the epidermis and skin cell regeneration and repair. As well, avocados contain vitamin E, which fights against skin cell damage (from the sun and pollution, among other elements) and vitamin C, which is involved in the production of collagen and elastin.

Regular consumption of avocados can lead to a better, clearer, healthier skin complexion.

4. Hormonal health

Avocados are one of the best sources of essential fats which are needed for hormone production and regulation. They contain plant sterols which essentially balance out the estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels, helping both sexes to have high energy levels and muscular development and retention.

5. Digestive health

The high (soluble) fibre content of avocados aids in the prevention of constipation issues by absorbing water and loosening stools. The B-complex vitamins in avocados aide in the conversion of proteins, fats and carbohydrates from food into energy, resulting in increased energy. Avocados also contain potassium and magnesium, both of which are necessary synergetic electrolytes in preventing dehydration.

6. Bone health

Since avocados contain several important minerals and vitamins (calcium, zinc, potassium, vitamin K and vitamin D), all of which are needed in the strengthening of bones, consuming this fruit is helpful in keeping our bones healthy and strong.

There is so much to say on the health benefits of eating avocados. They are such a powerhouse of goodness and so great to eat as well. With so many ways to prepare them.

How do you use avocado? Would love to hear your awesome ideas.
