Purvis Jewelers in Lakewood Closing After 44 Years in Business – Huge Sale Announced

For John Purvis, the jewelry business caught his attention early. After studying sculpture in high school, he was drawn to the craftsmanship and design of custom jewelry and launched it into a career. At only 21 years old he knew what he wanted to do - and opened up Purvis Jewelers in Lakewood.

For 44 years, family-run Purvis Jewelers has been in business on W. Colfax Avenue and ends an era by closing its doors forever. The reason to close now was spurred by their soon to be born 8th grandchild “That’s what pushed up it over the edge – that was motivation to do it this year,” said Pam Purvis, John’s wife, and business partner. With their three children and eight grandchildren spread out all over the country from the mid-west to California, they want to now spend their free time with family and traveling.

Shoppers looking for great deals on jewelry are in for a holiday treat when their closing sale opens to the public on Friday, Dec. 7, 2018, at 10 a.m. All merchandise will be deeply discounted, and the sale will last until all the inventory is gone. “We have pieces from $100 - $65,000 – something in every price range.”

"We have a particularly unique piece in the sale – it Is an exceptional 2.68 carats oval

Alexandrite ring – you won’t find anything like this anywhere near here,” said John.

Their unique offerings and custom designs have always been what set them apart from bigger retailers. The craftsmanship and personal attention have built a loyal following over the years, even forming close friendships with their customers.

The working couple has always made great business partners. John has been mainly focused on the custom design work and has won major awards, accolades and built a sterling reputation over the years in the jewelry industry. Pam has mainly focused on the showroom and building those strong customer relationships.

Running an independent business for more than four decades, they have definitely seen ups

and downs in the economy. “Lakewood has changed a lot since we first opened but our

customers haven’t - we’ve had the same customers for more than 40 years and are now

helping multiple generations,” said John.

“When I look back, I think it’s Pam’s positivity and optimism that has kept us going in the hard times, I’m not sure we would have been open this long if it wasn’t for her,” said John.

Pam’s retirement will be especially bittersweet as she remembers going to work at her first job on Colfax Avenue when she was just 15 years old – I’ve worked on Colfax my entire life,” she laughed.

The couple also believes in giving back to the community that has supported them for so many years. They have supported many organizations including the Betty Proctor Fund, Kiwanis Club, many Veteran’s organizations and held leadership roles in professional groups in the jewelry industry.

“Oh, I will really miss my customers,” lamented Pam even though she looks forward to

retirement “What job can you work for 40 years and celebrate the magical moments of

people’s lives every day?”
