February is nationally recognized as “Spay/Neuter Awareness Month” while the last week of February is considered "Spay/Neuter Awareness Week". The purpose is to encourage people to have their pets altered before the spring and summer months when there is a rampant overproduction of puppies and kittens. During that time most animal shelters experience an unmanageable increase in animal intake, including right here in Philadelphia!

DONATE TO LOW-INCOME FAMILIES IN NEED!

Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia is dedicated to helping decrease euthanasia at our crowded, open-admission animal control shelter, ACCT Philly. The most effective way to decrease euthanasia at shelters is to decrease the number of animals entering those shelters in the first place!

Through it's Community Pet Help Desk, which now resides within the walls of ACCT Philly and acts as a safety net for families in need, CNKP helps pets stay at home with their beloved families. There are a number of ways to help CNKP further its surrender-prevention efforts:

1. Donate to our monthly Community Pet Food Pantry via our Amazon Wishlist. We are especially in need of kitty litter at this time!

2. Donate to CNKP monetarily to help cover the cost of our monthly storage, transport and operational fees! 100% of donations to CNKP are tax-deductible.

3. Hold your own donation drive for our Community Pet Help Desk families at your school, office or business! We are always in need of the basics: dry dog food, wet/dry cat food, kitty litter, training treats, leashes, collars, harnesses (all sizes), pee pads. Email us at info@phillynokill.org to arrange pickup.

For the first time in history, Philadelphia's open-admission animal control shelter, ACCT Philly has saved 90% of the savable dogs that entered its shelter in a summer month. This incredible achievement is attributed to the hard work of the shelter's dedicated staff members, volunteers, rescue partners, fosters and the community of Philadelphia. During June, ACCT Philly took in 1,840 total animals including 1,133 cats, 494 dogs, and 213 wildlife & small animals. Its feline save rate reached 84%, no small feat in the midst of "Kitten Season".

In January of 2018, ACCT announced itself as a founding member of the Philadelphia No-Kill Coalition, a collective of animal-welfare agencies dedicated to making Philadelphia a no-kill city. While this cannot and will not happen overnight, incremental achievements such as increases to ACCT's save rate should be recognized and celebrated!

Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia relocated its Community Pet Help Desk to reside within the walls of ACCT Philly in March, 2018 in order to help those Philadelphians faced with having to surrender their pets during times of hardship navigate available resources necessary to keep their pets. A Help Desk employee is available seven days a week during front desk operation hours. Since the move to ACCT Philly, the Community Pet Help Desk has handled in 455 client cases and prevented 207 of 288 in-person surrenders to ACCT Philly. CNKP has also received 302 owner surrender requests through its Connect with a Rescue tool since March which connects pet owners who cannot keep their pets with a network of local no-kill animal shelters and rescues.

CNKP's Community Pet Pantry helps keep dozens of pets home with their beloved families every month.

Even with a 90% canine save rate in June and the CNKP Help Desk working in full swing, there is still work to be done! Summer is a very hard time for all shelters, as intake peaks. ACCT Philly's canine kennels are currently at capacity and kitten season is upon us. Help is needed to keep up the momentum! ACCT Philly is open for adoptions every single day. Consider saving a life by fostering or adopting a pet! Additionally, ACCT Philly is participating in NBC10's Clear the Shelters event on August 18 - swing by the main shelter or its Everyday Adoption Center for fee-waived adoptions, food, games, and music!

Even the most devoted pet parent can’t protect a dog or cat from inherited disease, illness or injury. That’s why CNKP works with Petplan pet insurance to secure health protection for every pet in their new homes. Pet health insurance helps pay the veterinary bills when pets get sick or injured. We chose to partner with Petplan because we believe they offer the most comprehensive coverage, the most flexible policy options, the simplest claims process and the most compassionate customer service of any pet insurance provider. Petplan takes the worry out of paying for your pet’s medical care, which these days can cost almost as much as our own. When you’re standing in your veterinarian’s office with a $3,000 estimate in your hand, having Petplan protection can mean the difference between getting your pets the care they deserve and seeking a less expensive (and usually less effective) option. Start now and look into Petplan pet insurance for your pet. It’s a simple way to make sure you always have access to the very best veterinary care and to help ensure your pet’s health for a lifetime. Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia supporters are eligible for a very generous offer.  By simply clicking HERE or using promo code "CITIZENS" and completing an application for a full policy you will enjoy a 10% lifetime discount, a $25 gift card to PETCO and the opportunity to have waived waiting periods (if activated within 24 hours of pet’s comprehensive physical examination).
