Silence is Golden

Updated: Oct 4, 2018

A friend posted this quote yesterday. I think it is excellent food for thought and certainly applies to those who are supporting a person on the grief journey.

“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” Stephen R. Covey (1932-2012)

This is a reminder that many times, a friend desires to express feelings and just needs a listening ear, especially when this friend is embarking on the challenging journey of finding some sort of stability after a serious loss due to death. The person processing grief does not need to be fixed. She does not need to be lectured. She does not need to ‘look on the bright side’ when her heart aches so badly she wants to fade away with the loved one who died. In due time, her timing, as she has stepped a little farther along on the journey, she will begin to have gratitude for what she had and she’ll be able to look ahead to better days. Until then…just listen.
