This is a good place to start. A beret has an unlikely and unique history. I have been wearing berets for years without quite realising how special they are...

A beret is a symbol of various cultures, people and identities dating as far back as ancient Greece. First documented in French in 1835, berets went through a number of stages, represented various groups and ideas.
Once a peasant’s class accessory, turned into a political stance and then a chic as hell fashion statement.
Painters (Rembrandt), writers (Ernest Hemingway), singers (Edith Piaf), jazz musicians (Thelonious Monk) and activists (guerilla leader Che Guevara, Black Panthers) all decorated their heads with this flat-crowned hat.
Still, it’s probably the chicness of a French lady that first comes to your mind.
