Announcing: 6-Week Mindfulness & Grief Program Begins This Fall
Dear Sharing Kindness followers,
Childhood bereavement is a public health issue that has long been overlooked. The death of a parent or other important person in a child’s life has been noted to be one of the most frequently reported disruptive childhood experiences which can derail a child’s development. In Massachusetts it is estimated that 1 in 16 children will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the age of 18, and on Cape Cod childhood bereavement due to opiate and suicide related deaths is higher than the national average.
Recognizing the gap in comprehensive grief-focused services, Sharing Kindness has collaborated with Calmer Choice and is offering a free, 6-week program Mindfulness: Tending to Your Grief for grieving adults and children ages 8-12 years old. In addition to Calmer Choice instructors, this program will be supported each week by a therapist who specializes in grief counseling. This program will run on Wednesday evenings in Orleans at The Federated Church of Orleans on the following dates: November 6, 13, 20 and December 4, 11, 18th. Due to a generous funder there is no cost at all to families.
Each week grieving families will have the opportunity to share a meal then break into the adult/caregiver group or the child group. Participants will learn how to direct their attention to their grief experience, understand stress physiology and the mind-body connection, increase their emotional awareness and compassionately handle difficult emotions that are part of grief. The adults and children come together at the end of the evening to share what they have learned.
We appreciate you sharing this information with folks in our community for whom this may be helpful. Your support is crucial to further our mission of supporting grieving children through preventive interventions that are research-based, with measurable outcomes.
By focusing on awareness and prevention, you can join Sharing Kindness and Calmer Choice and create social change that ensures a compassionate response to all grieving children and promotes healthy growth.
With gratitude and kindness,
The Sharing Kindness Team
