A suspect who police said fatally shot himself last week as he ran from officers in west Athens was identified Sunday by Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson as Michael Shawn Sellers Jr., 26, of Kelli Drive.

Athens-Clarke County police on Friday said that

Sellers died as the result of an incident that happened at about 10:30 p.m. when officers were investigating a domestic dispute and they attempted to stop a male who they believed was involved in the dispute, police said.

The suspect initially fled from the officers, but he stopped in a field in the 2000 block of Baxter Street where he shot himself, according to police.

Sellers was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he died from his injuries, police said.

Police have not released the incident report or given details about what happened prior to Seller shooting himself.

At the time of his death, according to court records, Sellers was under indictment for aggravated assault on a police officer for allegedly attempting to strike an officer with a vehicle in January at Athens Gardens.
