FC Davis Makes History - Secures US Open Cup Bid

For the first time ever, Davis will be represented in our nation's oldest and most prestigious soccer tournament.

After a standout 2019 campaign, FC Davis received a bid to the 2020 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup and will take the field against teams from the MLS, USL, NPSL and open division qualifiers.

The single elimination, nation-wide tournament brings together the best teams in the country to find out which club is the top side in the United States.

“It’s a massive accomplishment for our local community,” said owner Adam Lewin. “When we started this project for Davis in 2018, if you would have said we could potentially host the San Jose Earthquakes in our hometown in two years time, you would have received some funny looks. It's a testament to the continued growth of our organization and the support of our growing fan-base.”

The thought of a team from Davis being within a stones throw of hosting not only a USL team, but also an MLS team is nearly unbelievable, but that is exactly what can potentially happen this spring.

“It does make you smile,” said Lewin. “Everything we do is for Davis and our local community. To see the team on this stage so quickly is heartwarming, especially with the love we’ve seen from our town and surrounding area. It truly is a special, authentic connection.”

The Lion's first game appears to be against historic San Francisco side Olympic Club. Currently Olympic Club has a roster full of former MLS and USL players.

The second round see’s teams from the USL enter. The US Open Cup matches teams based on their geographic location which means FC Davis and Sacramento Republic would likely face off on the pitch.

In the third round, MLS teams enter. That would pit the Lion's against MLS side San Jose Earthquakes.

The first game for Davis will take place March 24th or 25th.

The second round will take place on April 7th-9th.

The third round will take place on April 21st - 23rd.

First round match-ups will be made public on January 22nd.

All games will be available on ESPN +.

A full breakdown of the tournament can be found on the US Soccer website.
