First Gold Detectives Alexander Pitman and John Walsh were murdered 28 April, 1926. Forensic searches revealed clues linking the licensee of the Cornwall Hotel, Evan Clarke, to the scene of the murder. Clarke turned King’s evidence and his testimony was crucial in the conviction of Phillip Treffene and William John Coulter. After a six-week trial, Treffene and Coulter were sentenced to death and hanged in mid-October, 1926, at Fremantle jail.
