Sometimes we have those days when we believe everything is going wrong. We feel that no matter how hard we work, pray, or try to live right, nothing seems to fall into place the way we desire. Stress overtakes our minds. Negativity begins to control our actions. And words, like rain pouring from the storm clouds of our toxic thoughts, enter the atmosphere.
I'm sure we all learned that "sticks and stones may break our bones, but words can never hurt us;" however, I have to disagree. Words are powerful, and they can hurt...even your own words can hurt you. Just imagine being in a financial rut and constantly telling yourself "I'll never have enough;" or, one I hear SO often during exam season from my peers, "I'm gonna fail this exam!!! *pause* Yep, definitely failing this one." I've surely been guilty of damaging my confidence and faith with non-life-giving words too; however, when my situation ends up working out in my favor, I think, "why did I put myself through all of that stress and worry? It was pointless."
Hebrews 11:1 says, "to have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of the things we cannot see". We are supposed to know that God has everything all figured out before we even begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We are "sure" and "certain" of this because our Father loves us unconditionally. He wants us to succeed; He also wants us to trust His plan. You ask, "how do I stay strong in faith in the midst of trials?" Sometimes all it takes is changing your words.
A common excuse to positive speaking sounds something like this: "Girl please. My words will be positive if/when my situation turns around". Unfortunately, that's totally twisted. In fact, there is little faith involved in thinking in such a way. Proverbs 18:20-21 says, "you will have to live with the consequences of everything you say. What you say can preserve life or destroy it; so you must accept the consequences of your words". Do what you have to do to give yourself the faith that God is working for your good. So turn the pouting into praise; make your words "preserve life"! When you feel negativity coming on, tell God "THANK YOU" for all He has done, and let Him know how much you love Him. Hear yourself speak of the times you remember God pulling you out of difficulties...no matter how big or small! Turn on some music to get yourself in the mood to praise Him instead of sulk in your misery.
Let it all out. Just let go, and let God!
It's amazing that speaking healthy words can actually change an entire attitude. I've tested it out, and it works! Instead of overbearing stress, I felt overwhelming peace. Not only will you make yourself happier by controlling your words, but you'll also improve the attitudes of those around you. Honestly, I'm still working on fully committing myself to this concept. I've had moments when nothing positive came out of my mouth just because I did not want to put in the effort to change my words. I actually enjoyed hearing myself complain. Sounds pretty bad right lol? But it is important for us to remember that our actions should not always be based on how we feel...instead, they should be based on what we know. And, according to Jeremiah 29:11, we know that God "plans to bring [us] prosperity and not disaster," so what is there to worry about? Take the burden off of yourself, and let God know you're giving the situation to Him by saying it out loud.
Remember to use your words for good. Let your words be uplifting, motivational, and full of confidence in the Lord. Speak positivity into your life, and let God handle the rest. Set yourself free.
